See/Think/Make: a UX Design Series 2014

See/Think/Make is an event series designed to bring together the curious and capable around new ideas in Interaction Design. Join us as we explore this new discipline through presentations and discussions by some of the brightest minds around.

Each event will explore Interaction Design through a particular lens:

• See: Understanding the role of exploration, observation, and empathy in the creative process.
• Think: Unpacking large concepts and finding new ways to solve problems
• Make: Getting down and doing the work of making our ideas real

For our second event, Dave Bellona, UX Designer at Twitter, will talk about The Paradox of the Cloud:

A promise of the cloud is that our environmental impact is lighter as we move from physical to digital products and documents. However, our production and consumption of digital content is increasing exponentially – a behavior facilitated through carefully designed experiences. For example, Facebook alone handles 350 million photo uploads per day. To house this growing data, we are building a vast physical infrastructure that depends on non-renewable energy resources. This infrastructure comes in the form of data centers – factories of the Information Age. Similar to the massive structures of the Industrial Age, we are again choosing to build systems that use resources faster than this planet can provide. As designers, we should question our role in encouraging exponential production and consumption, and have an opportunity to create products that inherently allow users to demand a sustainable digital future. A panel discussion will follow.
